Frequently Asked Questions
What is propane?
Propane is a hydrocarbon (C3H8) and is sometimes referred to as liquefied petroleum gas, LP-gas, or LPG. Propane is produced from both natural gas processing and crude-oil refining. Nearly 97 percent of propane used in the United States is produced in North America. It is nontoxic, colorless, and virtually odorless.
What can propane fuel in my home?
Propane is frequently used for space heating, water heating, cooking, fireplaces, and clothes drying. In outdoor spaces, propane is a widely used energy source for outdoor grills, lighting, and heating for pools and spas. When electric power goes out, propane is often the energy that powers standby generators.
Is propane safe for the environment?
Yes, propane is an approved, clean fuel listed in the 1990 Clean Air Act and the Energy Policy Act of 1992. Propane is one of the cleanest burning of all fossil fuels. Propane also is non-toxic, so it’s not harmful to soil or water. In the event of a leak, propane will dissipate into a vapor, leaving no lasting effect on the surrounding environment.
Does propane go bad like gasoline?
Propane is always there ready to use. Due to the nature of the storage and makeup, there is no shelf life of propane. One thing to note, that while the propane is good practically indefinitely, the storage containers must remain in good condition (cylinder/tank and valves).
